Traditional Mexican Whisk for Hot Drinks:
A Molinillo is a traditional hand carved, wooden whisk; mainly used to froth warm drinks such as Mexican hot chocolate, champurrado, milky coffee or atol.
Traditionally the elders of a family would use them to prepare these drinks. The Molinillo is used by rubbing the handle between the palms of the hands to make it spin with a rotary motion. This is done with the head of the Molinillo immersed in the hot beverage liquid – making it froth as it is beaten by the rotary motion.
Today, in modern Mexican culture, Molinillos can be made from other materials such as plastic or metal but we favour the hand-carved wooden products for their aesthetic beauty and link to tradition.
