Traditionally, the Epiphany in the catholic religion is celebrated on 6th January and commemorates the visit of The Three Wise Men to baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
In Mexico, the day is celebrated in a family gathering with gifts and a very special orange water flavour bread known as ‘Rosca de Reyes’ which is decorated with crystallized fruits, that represent the jewels that the kings brought to baby Jesus, quince jam, and a sugary paste that is usually everyone’s favorite.
This very special bread has the shape of a wreath with 1 -or more- mini plastic dolls (they used to be porcelain or clay) baked inside.
The customs states that the lucky person that receives a piece with the doll inside must host a party on 2nd February ‘Dia de la Candelaria’ and make tamales.
