A month filled with Mexican Pride
September is a very special month for us Mexicans. It is our Patriotic Month, when we celebrate Mexico’s Independence on 16th September and commemorate the history, traditions and people that make our country so special.
Here in South Africa, we are very lucky to celebrate this occasion every year at the Embassy of Mexico, where we are invited to join the Mexican community and friends of Mexico for the Independence celebration.
And there is one moment that gets me every time…
When the Mexican National Anthem begins to play, I get shivers and my eyes fill with tears. Even after so many years living in South Africa, hearing those familiar words and music makes me feel incredibly proud to be Mexican. 🇲🇽❤️
It is a beautiful reminder that, no matter how far from home we live, Mexico is always in our hearts.

🌮 Recipes of the Month
This September, we are celebrating with two of Mexico’s most beloved traditional dishes:
Chiles en Nogada
A true symbol of Mexican Independence, with its beautiful green, white and red colours representing our flag. A poblano chile filled with a delicious savoury mixture, covered in creamy walnut sauce and finished with ruby-red pomegranate seeds.
Pozole
Nothing says Mexican celebration quite like a big bowl of pozole! A comforting, festive dish traditionally enjoyed with family and friends, topped with all the classics — lettuce, radish, onion, oregano, lime and a little chile.

🌶️ Stars of the Month
Chile Guajillo
One of the most versatile dried chiles in Mexican cooking. Guajillo brings a beautiful deep red colour and a rich, slightly fruity flavour to sauces, marinades, pozole and so many traditional dishes.
Poblano Chillies
Mild, earthy and wonderfully versatile, poblano chiles are the star of our September Chiles en Nogada. They are also delicious roasted, stuffed or added to sauces.
